Introduction

Cryosphere Society of Nepal (CSN) is a nonprofit pioneering organization registered at the Office of Company Registrar and Social Welfare Council, Government of Nepal. CSN is pioneering ogranization dedicated to tackling the pressing issues arising from cryospheric changes in the majestic Nepal Himalayas. Established in 2023 and headquartered in Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu, CSN brings together a group cadre of cryosphere scientists committed to comprehensive research, education, and actionable initiatives aimed at addressingmitigating the impacts of the changing cryosphere and its impacts on local communities and ecosystems.

Our Mission

CSN's mission is to advance understanding, raise awareness, and take proactive measures to address the multifaceted challenges posed by cryospheric changes due to climate change in the Nepal Himalayas. Through collaborative efforts in research, education, and action, CSN endeavors to foster sustainable solutions for the preservation of the cryospheric environment and the well-being of the communities it sustains.

Core Areas of Operation

Research

a. Conducting cutting-edge collaborative research with and field-based measurements expeditions to enhance scientific understanding of the cryosphere.

b. Facilitating collaboration among scientists, and students and concerned stakeholders to undertake innovative research projects.

c. Providing funding and support for research endeavors focused on snow, glacier, permafrost, and glacier hazards.

Education

a. Engaging in outreach and dissemination activities to communicate cryosphere science and up to date scientific findings to diverse audiences.

b. Organizing workshops and seminars to facilitate dialogue and knowledge exchange among stakeholders.

c. Empowering communities with information and resources to adapt and mitigate the impacts of cryospheric changes.

Action

a. Advocating for policy changes and influencing decision-makers to prioritize cryospheric conservation and resilience.

b. Collaborating with local communities and organizations to implement sustainable practices and adaptation strategies.

c. Implementing direct mitigative measures to address immediate threats to the cryospheric environment.

d. Foster international collaboration and cooperation in cryosphere science to share data, best practices, and resources across borders for addressing transboundary issues.
